US scientists prove the possibility of four-phonon scattering
Scientists from Purdue University and Oak Ridge National Laboratory have developed a new cost-effective way to create a model of scattering four quantum phonons. Previously, this process was quite computation-intensive, making the technology impossible to implement. Up to now, physicists could model only the interaction of three phonons.
Their discovery will allow to improve a variety of currently existing methods, thermoelectric devices, nuclear fuel and ways of electronics cooling.
According to Pr. Xiulin Ruan, researchers have managed to prove the importance of four-phonon scattering. Earlier, it was almost impossible and financially unprofitable. However, the new method of simulation optimization has great chances to implement this process.
